Bernas, BBB president and CEO. “They will often tape them over legitimate QR codes or send them out in what appears to be an urgent threatening message or perhaps an amazing deal.” BBB said they've received reports from people who found the fake QR codes on parking meters and on public transit. “Scammers stick fake QR decals directly on top of real payment codes,” notes Bernas. The fake codes are often attached to traffic signal lights, signposts or windows, especially those of an empty storefront.
