A recent study published in Public Health Reports, “ Trends in Pediatric Opioid Ingestion and Associated Factors in Washington State, 2014–2023 ”, examines the growing impact of fentanyl on pediatric opioid exposures. Researchers found that fentanyl has become an increasingly significant driver of serious opioid ingestions among children and adolescents, underscoring the need for continued prevention and public health intervention. Researchers from the University of Washington School of Public Health and the Washington Poison Center analyzed 2,873 nontherapeutic opioid ingestions among children and adolescents ages 0–17 between 2014 and 2023. They also emphasize the need to address the disproportionate burden of severe opioid exposures in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. The study offers important state-level evidence to inform public health policy, injury prevention efforts, and targeted interventions to reduce opioid-related harm among children and adolescents.
