Tim Walz says the focus is now shifting toward helping northern Minnesota recover. Crews will be scaling back their response, and Walz said the state’s peacetime emergency will expire next Tuesday, August 11. Walz said the sate’s wildfire response has been highly successful with as many as 2400 people dedicated to fighting fires at the effort’s peak. Walz also said a special legislative session to approve wildfire relief is unlikely with the calendar being so close to the Minnesota primary election. The wildfires were all started by lightning strikes, and Walz warned conditions will become even more favorable for wildfires as Minnesota heads into its traditional fall fire season.
