The Rangers made one move on deadline day, sending utility infielder Josh Smith to Toronto for rookie reliever Adam Macko. The A’s and arguably Reds are the only teams that had a quieter deadline. Texas was in first place in the AL West at the time of the Silseth trade. The Rangers are staying the course with a roster that doesn’t feel like a legitimate contender and doesn’t seem to be especially well positioned in the near future. The Rangers can’t do anything about that, but they should’ve acted more decisively in one way or another once it was clear deGrom wasn’t in play.
