Many were shocked to see a jet of water arching out of a road cut at the side of Whitby Road and splashing down onto the tarmac near to the junction and with Princes Road.
A lane closure was put in place and a permit for United Utilities to carry out urgent works was granted by Cheshire West and Chester Council at 12.50pm on Monday.
The company said that the burst pipe had occurred while its engineers were attempting to restore water to a nearby block of flats.
A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Earlier this week, we received a report that a block of flats near Whitby Road had lost its water supply.
“The burst was quickly fixed, and water supplies have been fully restored to the block of flats.”
