Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets intercepted Russian military aircraft from the Sukhoi Su-24 family over the Baltic Sea. Images released by NATO Air Command on August 4, 2026, show a Su-24M strike aircraft and a Su-24MR tactical reconnaissance aircraft. Under NATO nomenclature, the Su-24M is known as the Fencer-D, while the Su-24MR reconnaissance variant is designated the Fencer-E. Since 2004, when the Baltic countries joined the Alliance without their own fighter aircraft, air policing in the region has been maintained continuously, with frequent interceptions of Russian aircraft flying through international airspace between mainland Russia and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
