Colorado State University’s regular August refresh to its forecast maintains its July prediction of a total of nine named storms, including four hurricanes.
That means seven more named storms through Nov. 30.
An average hurricane season has 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
CSU’s forecast, which is down from an April prediction of 13 named storms, also slightly reduced the chances of a major hurricane making a U.S. landfall.
That was the year of the brawny “Godzilla” El Niño, which, despite its strength, allowed 11 named storms to form including Hurricane Joaquin.
