A viral social media post suggested that Microsoft had quietly introduced a new background process in Windows 11 that monitors user activity and could affect system performance. The focus of the controversy is on a service called “Windows Health and Optimized Experiences” (whesvc), which has been part of Windows since 2025. Hanselman also acknowledged that the current wording describing the service in Windows is ambiguous and that Microsoft plans to update its description for better clarity. Microsoft previously launched a feature called Windows Recall, which continuously monitors screen activity and can take screenshots of sensitive information.
