It also planted the seeds for Dear Missing Friend, her debut novel, published by Cape Cod-based Sea Crow Press, which she celebrated with a launch party at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum shortly after publication in early May.
To research the novel, McGuirk spent nearly a decade poring over marriage, death and census records, ship manifests, passenger lists and whaling logs.
Although Dear Missing Friend is her first novel, McGuirk is no stranger to storytelling.
She has also led a media mentoring program at the City College of New York and writes about historical fiction heroines on her blog, “The Storied Sisters Society.”
McGuirk is already contemplating an illustrated companion to Dear Missing Friend, which was longlisted for the Goethe Award, a division of the Chanticleer Book Awards (CBIAs) recognizing emerging talent in post-1750 historical fiction.
