Three boys have reportedly discovered gold in Cheporor village, Kanyarkwat, West Pokot County, triggering a rush of people from Kenya and neighbouring Uganda in search of the precious metal. Many of those arriving are said to have crossed from Uganda, while others travelled from across West Pokot after news of the discovery spread, raising hopes of finding gold and earning quick income. The latest discovery has also put the spotlight back on West Pokot, which has in recent months emerged as one of Kenya's key artisanal gold mining counties. The county has recorded increased gold mining activities, particularly around the Pokot-Turkana border and other mining areas. Previous mining activities in the county have also raised safety concerns, with authorities stepping up efforts in recent months to curb illegal and unsafe gold mining operations and enforce compliance with the Mining Act.
