Hundreds of people fled Ethiopia’s Tigray region into neighboring Sudan this week after clashes erupted between federal forces and Tigrayan fighters near the border. It was the most serious fighting since the end of the war between the two sides in 2022. The region’s ruling Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) said government forces launched an assault Saturday on the Shererina area near the Sudanese border. It accused the government of violating the Pretoria peace agreement that brought the two-year civil war to an end, saying the assault was intended to “subjugate and divide” the people of Tigray.
