A missing nine-year-old child drew Vernon North Okanagan RCMP to the Shuswap River park on Waterwheel Street Monday, Aug. 3 at approximately 2:45 p.m.A family, visiting from Calgary, Alta., was spending the afternoon at the river when family members briefly lost sight of the child and it was presumed the child was under water and had failed to surface. As authorities were contacted, numerous bystanders began the search the water for the child. One bystander dove underwater and located the child submerged and pinned against fallen deadwood by the current. The child was brought to shore and bystanders, including a doctor and nurses, commenced CPR until the ambulance arrived. It is unknown how long the child was under water; however, it is suspected it was approximately five to 10 minutes.
