With highs sitting in the 80s and 90s across Colorado’s Western Slope, forecasters are warning of critical fire conditions driven by a combination of high winds and low relative humidity. The National Weather Service published a red flag warning for areas scattered around the Western Slope, which was in effect from 1-7 p.m. Tuesday. The warning stated gusts of wind could reach up to 30 mph while relative humidity hung at a low 7% to 12%, significantly below the mountains’ 30% to 50% average humidity range. Several Western Slope counties remain under Stage 2 fire restrictions since late June , including Summit, Eagle, Garfield, Grand, Routt and Pitkin counties. While Coloradans can still take steps to avoid the start and spread of wildfires, poor air quality from blowing smoke is already here.
