According to the latest state briefing, Texas has more than 40 confirmed cases, while Chihuahua, Mexico, has reported dozens more, underscoring the continued northward pressure along the border.
Officials reported more than 189,000 animal cases and more than 2,300 human cases across Mexico and Central America, highlighting the importance of surveillance and rapid response.
The largest resurgence occurred in 1972, when the United States experienced its worst outbreak after the 1966 declaration.
According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Library, Texas confirmed 90,000 cases that year after recording just 444 cases in 1971.
California, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arkansas also reported infestations, prompting the United States and Mexico to establish the joint Mexico-United States Screwworm Eradication Commission to push the eradication barrier farther south.
