Audi spent money developing futuristic door handles only for its boss to decide late in the game that the old fashioned solution worked betterAudi’s Q9 lost its electronic door handles after its CEO vetoed them. The big Q9 SUV is Audi’s most luxurious, tech-heavy vehicle yet, so Audi’s designers reasoned it needed a suitably posh set of door handles. The flagship SUV was originally supposed to feature electronic door handles instead of conventional mechanical ones, Gernot Döllner revealed to media. “We had an innovative door handle concept [but] we had a final test drive and said, it’s innovative, but from a customer perspective, it’s worse than a conventional door handle,” The Drive reports Döllner explaining. “Normally, it takes two years to change [door handles], but our body engineers did an outstanding job, and we were a little bit lucky that it worked package-wise,” Audi’s boss said.
