U.S. Reps. Bryan Steil (R-WI) and Laurel Lee (R-FL) this week expressed “serious concerns” about New Jersey apparently adding thousands of non-citizens to its voter rolls, and requested information from the New Jersey Department of State about its compliance with applicable federal voting laws. Rep. Steil, who is chairman of the U.S. House Administration Committee, and Rep. Lee, who is vice chair of the committee, joined two colleagues from the U.S. House Judiciary Committee in sending an Aug. 3 letter to New Jersey Lt. Gov. and Secretary of State Dale Caldwell, requesting documents and communications after the State Department admitted to adding 6,600 non-citizens to its voter rolls, noting that roughly 400 of those non-citizens have voted in an election. They pointed out that New Jersey Gov. Sherrill’s decision to blame IDEMIA, to not remove the non-citizens from the voter rolls, and to not disclose the issue to the public,” the lawmakers wrote.
