Letter: New Minnesota laws address domestic violence deaths
[]
Alexandria Echo Press | Alexandria, Minnesota
To the editor:The new bipartisan domestic violence laws which took effect across Minnesota on Aug. 1 represent a crucial turning point for survivor safety in Douglas County and statewide.
ADVERTISEMENTThe warrantless arrest window for misdemeanor domestic assault has been increased from 72 hours to two weeks.
Previously, an abuser could evade immediate accountability simply by dodging law enforcement for three days.
This expanded timeline gives local police the necessary runway to locate and arrest suspects who flee the scene.
