The attack began around 11 p.m. Monday in Abaushwa village, Nzorov Precinct, Guma County (Local Government Area), about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northeast of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.
The predominantly Christian farming community is also the hometown of former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.
Residents said 16 well armed fulani ethnic militia (Jihadists) stormed the village, opening fire before attacking fleeing residents with machetes.
At least 12 other residents suffered serious injuries and were taken to Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi for treatment.
“More than 16 heavily armed Fulani terrorists arrived on about nine motorcycles.
