Sefika Özlem Yaman Sahin is walking from Toronto to Ottawa to urge the federal government to extend work permits issued to Turkish and Syrian nationals following 2023 earthquakes.
Article contentYaman Sahin began the journey on July 19 and plans to arrive in Ottawa on Aug. 15.
She said she is walking on behalf of approximately 6,000 TS2023 permit holders across Canada, many of whom face uncertainty as their three-year work permits approach expiry.
“Time is very tight,” Yaman Sahin said, explaining that many of the permits are set to expire in September.
According to Yaman Sahin, the permits were made available both to people affected by the disaster and to Turkish and Syrian citizens who were already in Canada.
