A piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket collided with the moon on Aug. 5, 2026, at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph (or over seven times the speed of sound).
They estimated the impact occurred near the Einstein crater on the moon’s far northern region.
The Impact Also Renewed Concerns About Lunar DebrisScientists have also raised concerns about the human-made debris left on the moon following the impact.
The impact adds to an estimated 3,000 human-made objects already on the lunar surface.
More concerning than that, though, is the possibility of future missions colliding with these objects when orbiting around the moon.
