IN 2021, Farnoosh Talaee co-launched her first commercial art gallery, Mayten’s, with her then husband, Iranian American art collector and businessman Hirbod Human. Talaee has exhibited work by artists with shared Iranian heritage, multidisciplinary artists from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and IBPOC women. Such agreements typically allow artists to show work at other galleries, with commission splits negotiated between the exhibiting and representative galleries. “I don’t know how I let her take 50 percent of this work,” Rumi says. According to Rumi, Talaee claimed she hadn’t paid Rumi for works sold at the Next Contemporary because they hadn’t filed an invoice.
