Police said the arrest followed a report from a retailer who became suspicious after notes were presented during a transaction.
Officers subsequently searched the suspect and found him to be in possession of a large quantity of so-called “prop notes”.
The notes had allegedly been altered using discreet stickers to cover markings indicating they were not legal tender, making them appear similar to genuine banknotes.
Police said the counterfeit notes were particularly convincing, with features including a transparent window, metallic imagery and a hologram-style patch similar to those found on legitimate currency.
Officers are warning retailers and members of the public to remain vigilant after a number of these altered notes were reported in circulation in recent weeks.
