Cases of the illness caused by the cyclospora parasite roughly tripled in Massachusetts from June to July, and some of this year's cases are apparently linked to a national iceberg lettuce recall, state health officials said Wednesday. This year, Massachusetts had nine illnesses tied to cyclospora in May, 32 in June and 104 in July, according to the Department of Public Health. Federal health officials discovered a false positive for the cyclospora parasite in lettuce, a twist in the outbreak that's sickened thousands. But in Massachusetts, no large outbreak or local produce suspected to be causing the illness has been detected, the Department of Public Health said. NBC News reported Wednesday, citing a source, that New Hampshire is one of six states newly linked to the national outbreak; Massachusetts is not one of the other states included.
