The Australian Museum in Sydney has repatriated remains of Rapa Nui ancestors—including 17 skulls and one sample of hair—to Easter Island.
“We are experiencing a moment of profound emotion and justice for the Rapa Nui people,” Carlos Edmuns Paoa, president of the Rapa Nui Council of Elders, said in a statement (translated from Spanish).
(Easter Island, also called Rapa Nui, is located 2,300 miles off Chile’s coast.)
“This is a profound moment, for the Rapa Nui people, and for the Australian Museum,” Laura McBride, Australian Museum’s Director First Nations said.
Per the Art Newspaper, the Rapa Nui “community continues to reclaim its heritage, much of which is spread around the world.”
