The collision of a SpaceX rocket hit the Moon at approximately 7:35 BST, crashing near the Einstein Crater, which is the side of the Moon that is visible from Earth. Owned by Elon Musk, the SpaceX rocket weighs up to 4,000kg and was launched in January 2025 to carry scientific equipment to the Moon. The spacecraft orbiting the Moon at the time of the collision wasn’t positioned correctly to witness the crash. The SpaceX rocket is the same size as a school bus, and left a crater up to 30 metres wide.
