Solar power celebrated its fifteenth year in the UKThe very first solar farm capable of generating electricity to the grid was installed in Britain 15 years ago this summer. The 1MW Lower Coombe Farm Solar Farm was installed at Crewkerne in Somerset on 24 June 2011. Last year, the largest solar farm yet was opened, the 373-megawatt Cleve Hill installation in Kent. Chris Hewett, chief executive of trade body Solar Energy UK said: “Fifteen years ago, solar energy was a footnote in the electricity mix. The number does not include solar panels on supermarkets and warehouses as these are not recorded in the official figures, Solar Energy UK said.
