PC: County of MauiA Maui County Council committee voted 7-1 Tuesday to recommend adoption of a resolution authorizing the county to spend up to $6 million to acquire two privately owned West Maui water systems. Council Member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez pointed to years of advocacy from West Maui residents for public control of local water resources because nearly 90% of West Maui water has been controlled by private interests. Council Member Nohelani Uʻu-Hodgins called the West Maui water acquisition a “historical” opportunity. Maui County Council Chair Alice LeeLee said she wanted her decision to be grounded in facts and objectivity.
