The planned arrangement will allow vehicle owners to display approved celebratory messages, including “Just Married” and “Called to the Bar”, through an official process.
DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey said such practices are currently unauthorised because vehicle number plates must follow approved identification formats.
The special plates will only be valid for a short period, with users required to pay for the service.
According to the DVLA, the initiative will provide a balance between allowing motorists to celebrate important moments and maintaining proper vehicle registration standards.
Examples of messages expected to be permitted include “Just Married” for newlyweds and “Called to the Bar” for newly qualified lawyers.
