No used vehicle import ban: GSA announces tougher standards from October

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has dismissed claims that Ghana will ban the importation of used vehicles, clarifying that new enforcement measures coming into effect on October 1, 2026, are aimed at improving safety and quality standards.
The Authority said new vehicle models will have to undergo homologation, while used vehicles must conform to Ghana’s standards before they are shipped into the country.
The enforcement, which begins on October 1, 2026, will apply to requirements under Ghana Standard GS 4510, which regulates the importation of used vehicles.
The regulation also excludes originally manufactured right-hand-drive vehicles, vehicles assembled from spare parts, vehicles without speedometers displaying kilometres per hour and vehicles older than 10 years.
“It is worth noting that this does not constitute a ban on the importation of used vehicles,” the GSA stated.
