Mount Pelée, one of history’s deadliest volcanoes, is showing increased seismic activity, prompting scientists to closely monitor the Caribbean volcano while emphasizing that an eruption is not considered imminent.
The Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory reported detecting 124 volcanic earthquakes between July 24 and July 31, nearly triple the number recorded the previous week.
Throughout July, scientists documented 331 volcanic earthquakes beneath the volcano.
“The probability of eruptive activity in the short term remains low,” the Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory said in an alert.
“However, considering the observations accumulated over the past months and years, an evolution of the situation in the medium term (weeks to months) cannot be excluded.”
