More than 85,000 Texas students have been awarded funding through the state’s new Education Freedom Account program ahead of the 2026-27 school year, the Texas comptroller’s office reported this week.
The comptroller’s office says 85,434 accounts have been funded through the program, which allows eligible families to use state money for private school tuition, homeschooling expenses, tutoring, educational therapies, and other approved education-related costs.
The program was created after lawmakers approved Senate Bill 2 during the 2025 legislative session, establishing a $1 billion Education Freedom Account program.
According to the comptroller’s office, more than 274,000 students applied for the program.
The Education Freedom Account program remains one of the most closely watched education initiatives approved by the Legislature in recent years.
