A Fire on the Only Way InThe tracks toward Machu Picchu went quiet Tuesday. Three PeruRail departures from Ollantaytambo and seven from Machu Picchu were canceled. Ferrocarril Trasandino, the rail concessionaire, said emergency trains would be authorized to evacuate passengers from the Machu Picchu station once conditions became safe. On May 25, New 7 Wonders warned that infrastructure and management problems could threaten the status it awarded Machu Picchu in 2007. The fire near Machu Picchu does not prove that Peru’s crown jewel is doomed.
