On 5 August 1704, the Parliament of Scotland’s Act of Security (also called the Act for the Security of the Kingdom) was given Royal Assent. Queen Anne’s last surviving child died in 1700, leaving no clear Protestant heir to the throne. Per the Act of Security, upon Queen Anne’s death, the Estates of Scotland would meet to choose a Protestant successor descended from Scottish kings. Queen Anne initially declined to give royal assent to the bill. In need of both funds and soldiers, Queen Anne ultimately acquiesced and enacted the law.
