By Amos HarrisLiberia’s Information Minister, Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, has declared that the government will continue to challenge the country’s media to uphold professional standards, insisting that journalists and media institutions must remain accountable for their reporting rather than expect immunity from criticism. Speaking amid growing tensions between the state and the press, Minister Piah stated that “the media is not covered by the blood of Jesus,” emphasizing that no institution is beyond scrutiny. In response, the Press Union of Liberia convened a press conference on Monday, August 3, 2026, strongly rejecting the allegations. Minister Piah, however, defended the administration’s stance, reiterating that constructive criticism of the press should not be interpreted as an attack on press freedom. Media observers stress that both public officials and journalists carry a responsibility to maintain public trust through transparency and accountability.
