Mechlain, who has also announced his complete withdrawal from the former ruling party. In a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to CDC National Chairman Janga Augustus Kowo, Mechlain stated that his departure takes immediate effect. Mechlain attributed his departure to what he described as years of disappointment over development commitments allegedly made by former President George Manneh Weah during a visit to Grand Gedeh County on February 21, 2021. He argued that the failure to fulfill those promises damaged his credibility as county chairman and left many residents feeling abandoned. Mechlain’s departure is expected to fuel debate over the CDC’s internal cohesion in Grand Gedeh, a county long regarded as one of the party’s strongest support bases.
