By welcoming every child regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, public education provides a unique strength to a community. Public education provides a shared space where children learn, build friendships, and participate in traditions. It is with appreciation for the role of structured education that I consider South Dakota’s growing trend toward "homeschool." Under South Dakota law, homeschool students are fully entitled to participate in public school extracurricular activities, including high school sports and fine arts. So, when a family files for homeschool, the local school district receives zero state funding for that child.
