Droughts and historically low river levels across Europe are causing some nuclear power plants to either reduce output or close down. At the start of the week there were six nuclear units reporting being closed down and 17 units with restrictions in place. Beznau Nuclear Power Plant in Switzerland has also been affected by temperature increases in the Aare River. In Romania, the shutdown of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant has caused a nationwide state of emergency to be declared for August. The Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant provides roughly 20% of Romania’s electricity and is the nation’s only nuclear facility.
