For students taking a vehicle to college, AAA recommends families notify their insurance provider about where the vehicle will be located and confirm their existing coverage remains appropriate. AAA recommends families check the specific terms and limits of their existing policies rather than assuming a student’s property is fully covered. The organization also recommends students create a digital inventory of valuable belongings, including photographs and receipts when available. AAA recommends completing an insurance review before students move to campus, including checking auto coverage, homeowners insurance limits and potential renters insurance needs.
