At the time of his retirement from touring, Hughes is a member of the Los Angeles-based hard rock band Black Country Communion. Previously, Hughes was the lead vocalist and bassist of funk rock band Trapeze from 1969 to 1973. The band featured Hughes on bass and lead vocals, guitarist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham and keyboardist Derek Sherinian. Hughes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple in 2016.
