Indian American Thanedar loses Democratic Party nomination to progressive rivalIndian American Congressman Shri Thanedar has lost the Democratic primary in Michigan to Democratic Socialist Donavan McKinney by a narrow margin. Thanedar, first elected in 2022, was defeated in a majority African American district of Detroit. The seat in a majority African American constituency that covers parts of Detroit and its suburbs is considered safe for the Democratic Party in the November mid-term elections. Thanedar’s victory in the last two elections was remarkable because he ran in a constituency that is nearly 75 per cent African American. This time McKinney, an African American, was the only opponent in the primary.
