London Underground’s football league celebrates 30 years with new exhibition

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the London Underground Football League, and a small exhibition has opened telling some of its story.
Sport has been a core element of transport staff pretty much since transport companies were set up, but it seemed to fade as an organised effort in the 1980s until the new football league was established in 1996 as an informal affair of 10 teams.
As an exhibition, it highlights the often-overlooked social aspect of working for a large organisation, although, as a non-football fan, my main takeaway was astonishment that the museum shop doesn’t sell football tops.
The exhibition has opened at the LT Museum and is included in the entry price.
As an aside, archival research is seriously hampered by the extensive reporting on early sporting tournaments and teams.
