EVANSVILLE – As the Cyclosporiasis parasite spreads to 47 states, reported cases in the midwest continue to skyrocket – and the first two deaths connected to the parasite have been reported. Michigan health officials announced the first two recorded U.S. deaths linked to Cyclosporiasis alongside more than 11,000 cases in the state Monday, Aug. 3. Behind Michigan and Ohio (4,013 cases), the Hoosier State has the third-largest number of confirmed cyclosporiasis cases in the nation. Over 1,524 cases of cyclosporaiasis on were confirmed as of Tuesday, Aug. 4, according to data from the Indiana Department of Health. A prevailing fear of lettuce has gripped large swaths of the U.S. since early May, when the first cyclosporiasis cases emerged.
