Sindh is deploying facial recognition attendance technology in public schools from August 17, making it the first Pakistani province to use biometric AI to tackle teacher absenteeism, one of the most persistent and well-documented failures in the country’s public education system. The system requires teaching and non-teaching staff to mark their arrival and departure through facial recognition technology, with attendance records stored digitally. Facial recognition combined with geotagging addresses the core weakness of each of these approaches simultaneously. Facial recognition attendance data generates a real-time, province-wide picture of teacher presence that currently does not exist in any usable form. Facial recognition combined with geotagging and digital record storage creates an attendance verification system that closes the loopholes that previous approaches left open.
