Because direct, uniform data on human presence across the vast Arctic landscape is difficult to collect, the research team used satellite observations of artificial light at night as a reliable proxy for human infrastructure.
Rather than treating human activities as separate from ecological processes, the study incorporates human infrastructure directly into Arctic Earth systems to demonstrate how human presence actively interacts with environmental conditions.
Senior author Gabriela Schaepman-Strub emphasised that Arctic fires pose severe threats to local communities by destroying housing, transport corridors, public health, and traditional livelihoods.
Furthermore, tundra fires burn away vegetation and organic soil layers, accelerating permafrost degradation and driving ecosystems into permanently fire-prone states.
