The pandemic’s governing claim was that a few credentialled people knew, that their knowledge was settled, and that dissent was wicked. Two hundred and eighty-eight economists signed a document announcing that, on the largest allocative question of their lifetimes, it did not arise. The median age of an Australian death attributed to Covid was in the mid-eighties, at or above life expectancy. For this she was called a granny killer and asked on national television whether she was advocating that people die. Nobody suggests the economists concealed anything; the letter was public, signed and sincere.
