This country’s contempt for its people is easily and understandably attributed to a leader who is eager to show that contempt as often as possible. Ian Bell’s WTO/99 is ultimately about this ongoing cycle. The documentary comprises archival footage of the Seattle World Trade Organization protests that took place during the WTO’s 1999 ministerial conference, four years after the global organization’s establishment. In toto, WTO/99 is the closest a contemporary audience can get to experiencing those four days as they occurred (and as they were portrayed) in real time. (Officers becoming furious at the mere presence of a camera is evidently a tale as old as the technology.)
