Homer and the Popcorn GodsEven though widely acknowledged as successful both commercially and in terms of utilising IMAX technology, conservative commentators have criticised the film for being politically correct and woke. Reading The Odyssey, unlike Nolan’s film, there is a constant interaction between the gods and Odysseus and his crew as they seek to return to Ithaca and their families after Troy was destroyed. Homer’s poem, on the other hand, describes Circe as singing in a beautiful voice while weaving at a loom. Instead of wooden bowls and slops, Circe offers Odysseus a “silver-studded chair” and serves him “mellow wine” in a “golden cup”. The language in Nolan’s film, while expected given its success relies on visual images, is drab, flat and uninspiring.
