A legal defense group is demanding that New Jersey officials investigate the death of a detainee at Delaney Hall, the Newark-based ICE facility where many immigrants seized by federal operations on both sides of the Hudson River have been held under questionable conditions.
Cornejo, who immigrated from El Salvador nearly two decades ago and leaves behind a 12-year-old daughter, died on Saturday at the New Jersey detention facility, which has become the site of major protests over the quality of life inside.
In addition, Delaney must be closed, and we must end the system of immigration detention that continues to put lives at risk.”
While ICE claims that Cornejo received adequate medical attention, his family says that staff did not act until he collapsed, although he had requested medical aid.
Upon visiting the facility in June, U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat told amNewYork that he personally met individuals who were not given the appropriate medical assistance.
