DETROIT — Rep. Shri Thanedar was taken down Tuesday by Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-backed Michigan state Rep. Donavan McKinney in the latest primary victory for the progressive left. 4 Michigan Dem Rep. Shri Thanedar survived past primary challenges in the past, thanks in part to the field being split up. 4 Donavan McKinney enjoyed a cleared-up field to take on Thanedar, something the congressman’s past foes didn’t have. Thanedar was backed by House Democratic leadership, as is standard. In 2018, Thanedar mounted an unsuccessful bid for Michigan governor, losing out to Gretchen Whitmer in the Democratic primary.
