While all that boundless energy and mega talent were challenging growing up (he was just 19 when he began to write some of the defining songs of the decade), it’s that restless intensity that keeps him going without his batteries ever running lowHis first language is Yiddish and his accent is unmistakably chassidish. Yet that hasn’t stopped Bentzi Stein from composing some of the biggest hits across the Jewish music scene over the past few years — many of them in the simple Hebrew vernacular of the heart in desperate need of connection. But that’s just one hat. He has written some of the defining songs of our era: “Abba Melech HaOlam,” “Al Tipol,” “Mosai Timloch / Ototo,” “Yamim She’avru Bachoshech,” “Eilu Va’Eilu,” and “Tedaber Ito,” not to mention authentic chassidic melodies such as “Niggun Kerestir,” “Haneiros Halalu,” “Nem Unz Shoin Aheim,” “Nishmas,” and the newly released “Hillel Hazaken.”
